About: Alside

Headquartered in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Alside manufactures vinyl siding, windows, patio doors, fencing, and railing products for new homes and remodeling projects. In operation for nearly 65 years, Alside was founded after Akron businessman Jerome Kaufman devised a method of baking a coat of paint on aluminum siding, which manufacturers had sold unpainted up to that time. This became the country’s first low-maintenance exterior siding product.

Initially, Alside offered pre-painted aluminum siding in white, gray, or cream. The firm opened its first supply centers in Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis in 1952. Eight years later, Alside built a new $3.5 million plant and corporate offices in a cornfield in Northampton Township, which would later become part of Cuyahoga Falls. Alside’s company headquarters remain at this site today. The company went public and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 1961.

As competition and aluminum prices increased, Alside diversified its product lines into stone, brick, and steel siding. In the early 1970s, Alside added storm doors and windows made of aluminum to its offerings. Vinyl siding, which the company could manufacture with embedded color rather than having to paint it, became the company’s staple in the late 1970s: Alside built its first vinyl manufacturing facility in 1979.

Alside continued its shift to vinyl in the 1990s by creating subsidiaries UltraGuard and Premium Garage Door Company, to sell vinyl fence and garage door products, respectively. Alside launched its Performance Series vinyl windows in 1995. The following year, Alside introduced its Charter Oak Premium Vinyl Siding, a product line that revolutionized the industry with its beauty, as well as ease of installation and durability. The company later branched out with CenterLock, Seneca, and Landscape lines.

Today, Alside employs almost 3,000 workers in 7 manufacturing facilities located in Ohio, Iowa, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, and Washington. A network of over 95 Supply Centers across the U.S. distributes the company’s product lines to contractors, remodelers, homebuilders, and independent distributors. As a division of Associated Materials Incorporated, Alside belongs to the Vinyl Siding Institute and the National Association of Home Builders. To learn more, visit Alside.com.
